I finished reading the book 2 days ago and, because I sincerely acknowledge its valuable content, I'd like to share some thoughts before you make any commitment.I’ll divide this review in 3 parts. First, I'll write thoughts about to whom I’d recommend reading it. Then, I’ll share a brief summary from each chapter. Last, I’ll express personal thoughts and strategies to comply with the program.RECOMMENDATIONIf you haven’t had the opportunity to read any of the 2 previous Plant Paradox books yet, and would like to understand the program and hopefully give it a try, you are in the right place: this one piece will cover all. It’s a short, comprehensive, and actionable book. As Gundry says, the present book focuses on practical matters, specially for those who have a busy life and think the program is impractical. If, however, you’ve already read any of the 2 previous books and are satisfied [or perhaps not] with what you've learned, please, save your money for the upcoming book—The Longevity Paradox. In fact, since I believe it’ll be groundbreaking, I’ve already pre-ordered it. Having said that, if you’re like me, who, even after reading and researching details over again, enjoy learning new findings over time, then this book here, in fact, brings new perspectives on how to interpret previous concepts.SUMMARYIf I could summarize the book in a few words, I'd say that it’s a revised edition of the classic program, where the content is laid out in a succinct and more practical way to be implemented. In other words, I sincerely believe Gundry’s main objective here was to make it easier, walking us through the program, step by step.[Chapter 1] It’s a primer on lectins. We learn what the heck lectins are; the food sources high in lectin; the effects of consuming foods high in lectins; how lectins influence our weight; as well as the 7 deadly disruptors that damage our gut and immune system. It’s important to highlight them. They are: [1] broad spectrum antibiotics; [2] non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; [3] stomach acid blockers; [4] artificial sweeteners; [5] endocrine disrupters commonly found in plastics, personal care products, and household cleaners; [6] genetically modified foods and the herbicide roundup; and [7] over exposition to blue light specially in the evening.[Chapter 2] Here we learn the details of the program itself: how it sets apart from other programs; how it can restore our health issues; how it can benefit those who wish to lose weight; and also about the 4 rules for success. I fell in love with them when I read the previous book, and will share here with you: [1] what you stop eating has far more impact on your health that what you start eating; [2] pay attention to the care and feeding of your gut buddies, and they'll handle the care and feeding of you; [3] fruit might as well be candy; and [4] you're what the things you're eating ate.[Chapter 3] Now we delve into the 30-day challenge, where we learn the details of the 3-phase challenge—why, what, and when to eat during these phases—explained in an easy and comprehensive format. At the end there is a section on intermittent fasting.[Chapter 4] This chapter starts with a list of the foods we'd want to stock our kitchen, and a list of those we'd want to avoid because they're either high in lectin or detrimental to our overall health. Then Gundry explains the details of certain foods we’d want to eat frequently due to their benefits. Some examples are: almonds, avocados, cassava flour, cauliflower rice, coconut, eggs, nori seaweed, and extra virgin olive oil. He then moves gears towards the common pitfalls we habitually fall while choosing our food. Also, he shares common stores [such as Costco, Trader Joe's, Amazon, Thrive Market, Walmart] where we can purchase high-quality food without spending extra money when compared to what we’d spend following the Standard American Diet. Finally we find a description of Gundry's favorite kitchen equipments and how we can take advantage of them.[Chapter 5] Here is where we learn practical strategies to start the program, making it easy to overcome resistance such as having a family to take care, demanding work schedules, stress, and so forth. Gundry shares ways to simplify our grocery list, notes on how to be more realistic towards our goals, as well as a handful and well-explained strategies to prepare our meals by maximizing the quality and taste while saving time. He finishes up with many suggestions on how to choose, prepare, and store ready-to-go snacks and meals whenever we need.[Chapter 6] This is the one chapter that sets it apart from his previous books. Gundry addresses concerns we may face when dealing with specific needs such as tailoring the program for kids, parents, vegans, as well as for patients in extreme medical conditions. He doesn’t leave behind special recommendations for those on ketogenic diet. I don’t have kids yet, but I love the section about preparing kid-friendly meals. At the end of the chapter we find a short section about the importance of good sleep and hydration, as well as considerations on supplements.[Chapter 7] This is a no-brainer 30-day meal plan, with all meals outlined. More than that, there is a weekly prep plan for each one of the 4 weeks. Recipes are found in the following chapter.[Chapter 8] In terms of recipes, I’ve only had the chance to try two of them. The Salmon Avocado Bowl was delicious, which is made with avocado oil and cauliflower rice. The second recipe, which I tried yesterday, was the Sage and Mushroom Soup. Well, it’s aromatic and works perfectly as an entrée for cold evenings. Easy to prepare.PERSONAL THOUGHTSAlthough I’m fortunate to be in good health, I've been feeling better than ever after deciding to embark on Gundry's low lectin program late in 2017 after reading the main Plant Paradox book twice. I say twice because it was during the second read that I absorbed the details, and committed to try it out for the initial 6-week program. Not only my skin looks brighter, but I also have more energy during the day and my digestive system has worked smoother since I took the leap and adopted this lifestyle. At first, the program Gundry proposes looks both daunting and difficult to comply. Even though I’d been following a combination of other similar protocols during the last couple of years from figures such as Joseph Mercola, Mark Hyman, Valter Longo, Chris Kresser, and Frank Lipman, having to make only small adjustments such as removing darling foods high in lectin such as cashews, eggplants, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers was a difficult task. After all, Gundry added the lectin factor—a protein produced by certain plants used as a defensive strategy that can trigger a cascade of damaging effects on our health. It took me over 10 years to fully comprehend my ways to keep unnecessary inflammation away while getting more energy. That journey started most probably because I’ve been fascinated about the impact of good nutrition on physical performance and the joy of sharing meals we prepare with loved ones.I say all that because, choosing to give it a try, you will be jumping ahead decades of unbiased clinical and experimental researches. Although these experts I mentioned above are all brilliant, in my humble opinion Gundry’s program is the latest refinement. That said, I'd like to share with you a strategy to ease the transition towards any diet you intend to try. First and foremost, we could think not as a “diet” but as a “lifestyle” instead. Besides creating a healthy and positive habit, we could embrace it as part of our own personal values. It doesn’t matter exactly where we’re right now as long as we vow to move the needle towards a more meaningful lifestyle. For that, changes in our current diet can be done all at once or can be refined over time. Personally speaking, specially in terms of eating habits, I'd consider taking the time to create a strong and lasting connection with our choices—specially these days we’ve been emotionally and physically attached to food. For example, during the first week you could remove from all of your meals a group of detrimental foods such as sugar and artificial sweeteners while making sure to include at least two tablespoons of a high-quality extra virgin olive oil every day. Keep adjusting on a weekly basis while you get familiar with the program chosen until you take the leap and commit fully to the program. In this case, Gundry proposes an initial 30-day challenge. After all, what’s 30 days when we are supposed to live beyond 80 years given the right conditions?Last, some people may claim that this lifestyle is expensive. Looking from distance it does look pricey. But trust me, it can be easily done spending less money than the Standard American Diet. I appreciate how thoughtful Gundry was to write the section “Food Shopping Tips and Tricks” where he shares notes on how we can take full advantage of Costco, Trader Joe’s, Thrive Market, Amazon, Walmart, and local farmers market. Besides that, throughout the book Gundry mentions specific brands to look for.I’ve been on Phase 3 for over a year now. Finishing the book, I decided to come back to Phase 1 and follow the 30-day challenge, starting this coming Monday. It’ll be a positive reset.Well, it turned out to be a long review. I hope it helps you in some way.Take good care,Haical

UPDATE. For two weeks now I’ve been following the main principles of Dr. Gundry’s program. Lost 6 pounds so far, and that after already being on a diet, so it wasn’t water loss. And no nagging hunger pains, either. This doctor has developed an easy-to-follow accessible style, person-to-person. His previous four books on the lectin factor and better health have laid a solid groundwork for this and coming books.RESULTS. That’s the real test of the book, isn’t it? For six months now I’ve been struggling with diverticulitis that gave me almost constant pain in my left side and sometimes in my mid-chest. My doctor referred me back to my gastroenterologist, but I’d have to wait five weeks for an appointment. What would he do? Perhaps another colonoscopy or similar exam. That sure didn’t appeal to me. When I learned about Dr. Gundry’s lectin-reduced diet, I decided to try that first. If this program reverses my health challenge, that would be wonderful. So far progress has been there although a bit slow. That could be because I have not followed every jot and tittle of this program. Then again, Doc does allow for some minor deviation! Patience rather than perfection.ADAPT AND ADOPT. There is a lot to adapt to, of course. But the author lays out a very clear program. (1) How and where to shop in order get everything together. (2) How to prepare the recipe--breakfast, lunch and dinner for every day of the week, and for four weeks-plus.TASTY RECIPES? I’ve started trying some of the recipes and have no trouble switching from my old ones to these. In fact, some make me feel better right off, and that motivates me. Over the next few weeks I look forward to gradually trying even more of them.HINT #1. Don’t wing it or try this program until you understand the principles behind it. That will motivate you, as it does me, to adopt it better to my tastes and schedule. Pay attention to “Food Shopping Tips and Tricks” to simplify and save money at shopping for the ingredients you’ll need.HINT #2. I first checked out the doctor’s previous book that offers “THE PLANT PARADOX COOKBOOK: 100 delicious recipes”, as well as the principles behind them. In some ways those recipes are easier to follow then this present book and could offer more variety.HINT #3. Also, if you haven’t already, study the “intermittent fast” concept. My wife was already on that program with good results, so I blended in with her program. It has worked well and we still have together-time at our meals. We also go out for one meal a week and better know how to choose.MANY YEARS AND MUCH RESEARCH. This clear step-by-step program follows the author’s many years of treating thousands of patients with mild to severe health challenges. It lives up to the author’s promise: “I truly want to make it as simple as possible for you to try out this program and reclaim your health.” He’s gotten some amazing results. I too am motivated and am certain I’ll receive even more favorable results. I’ll keep you posted. One of the doc’s fundamental beliefs which encourages me: “Do what you can with what you’ve got, wherever you are.”The book also offers some internet resources, including a community of followers who could help you with concerns, questions and encouragement. Dr. Gundry’s approach to better health is not the only good one that can work, but it is helping me and I’m sure will help thousands of others.

This doctor is THE most intelligent and trustworthy doctor you can ever ask for. He knows what he’s talking about. Follow his book and live your life exactly as he states in this and all of his other books. You’ll never feel or look better and you’ll reverse disease in your body. I’m living proof!!! I am a 49 yr old female with ALS. When I don’t eat this way my symptoms get worse. When I follow his advice completely, I feel amazing and my symptoms stall. I truly believe that the way we eat dictates how long we live. If you want to feel the best you’ve ever felt and reverse disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, neurological diseases etc., then follow Dr. Gundry’s advice. Read his books.

More concise and easier to manage than the original book. It's life changing!

Unless one has extreme health issues this diet/way of life is very restrictive, expensive and just not practical in the real world.

Great synopsis of the first book, can read in a day so makes it easy to get on the diet. It’s changed the life of my parents myself and my wife so I’m getting this for all of my friends!

I saw an introduction to this diet in a magazine, it sounded promising, so I pre-ordered the book with great anticipation. The diet is extremely restrictive, for example a small salad for breakfast , or you can just skip breakfast. It also promotes eating a lot of avocados, which have their own toxins if you research it. You can starve yourself and lose weight without subjecting yourself to the indignity of paying this crackpot. One look at the author, and I should have realized it was a scam- he does not appear at all healthy with a ruddy bloated looking face.

I made a mistake.... the book is paperback. I wanted a book that shows all the colorful pages especially the colors of fruits and veggies and the pyramid chart.

From Publishers Weekly
A retired British brigadier, MacDonald was invited to Hanoi in 1990 by the Vietnamese government to interview Vo Nguyen Giap, the legendary general whose "primitive" army defeated two great Western powers. The result is the first major biography of this great military leader, as well as a new look at his army and its methods of waging war. MacDonald traces Giap's 30-year leadership of the Vietminh and People's Army, describing how he learned to exercise his talents as organizer, logistician, strategist and tactician against the French in the 1940s and 1950s and against the Americans in the 1960s and 1970s, employing a unique combination of guerrilla and conventional warfare. An important political and military figure, Giap was involved in decision-making at the highest levels of government. As MacDonald points out, Giap can claim the largest share of credit not only for winning two major wars but also for securing the unification and independence of his nation. There is unfamiliar material here about Giap's brilliant victory over the French at Dien-bienphu and his creation of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the anti-aircraft defenses of Hanoi. MacDonald confidently nominates him for membership in that exclusive club, the Great Captains. Photos.

From Library Journal
Vo Nguyen Giap, the architect of Communist Vietnam's decisive victories over France and the United States, arguably ranks with the greatest names in the history of warfare. Yet he remains an elusive figure in this work by British author-soldier Macdonald, who interviewed the elderly Giap in Hanoi in 1990. If the man himself remains opaque, his military feats do not. Under the guise of biography, Macdonald provides a succinct, vivid, and well-informed military history of modern Vietnam, in particular bringing to life the key battles of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and Khe Sanh in 1968. His brief chapter on the Ho Chi Minh Trail is fascinating, and his analysis of America's war in Vietnam is illuminating. Unfortunately, Macdonald tells us almost nothing of Giap's political role, and his political analysis is derivative and jejune. For academic and most public library collections. Military Book Club selection.

"It's appropriate that [Shop Class as Soulcraft] arrives in May, the month when college seniors commence real life. Skip Dr. Seuss, or a tie from Vineyard Vines, and give them a copy for graduation.... It's not an insult to say that Shop Class is the best self-help book that I've ever read. Almost all works in the genre skip the "self" part and jump straight to the "help." Crawford rightly asks whether today's cubicle dweller even has a respectable self....It's kind of like Heidegger and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."-Slate "Matt Crawford's remarkable book on the morality and metaphysics of the repairman looks into the reality of practical activity. It is a superb combination of testimony and reflection, and you can't put it down."-Harvey Mansfield, Professor of Government, Harvard University "Every once in a great while, a book will come along that's brilliant and true and perfect for its time. Matthew B. Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft is that kind of book, a prophetic and searching examination of what we've lost by ceasing to work with our hands-and how we can get it back. During this time of cultural anxiety and reckoning, when the conventional wisdom that has long driven our wealthy, sophisticated culture is foundering amid an economic and spiritual tempest, Crawford's liberating volume appears like a lifeboat on the horizon."-Rod Dreher, author of Crunchy Cons: The New Conservative Counterculture and Its Return to Roots "This is a deep exploration of craftsmanship by someone with real, hands-on knowledge. The book is also quirky, surprising, and sometimes quite moving."-Richard Sennett, author of The Craftsman "Matt Crawford has written a brave and indispensable book. By making a powerful case for the enduring value of the manual trades, Shop Class as Soulcraft offers a bracing alternative to the techno-babble that passes for conventional wisdom, and points the way to a profoundly necessary reconnection with the material world. No one who cares about the future of human work can afford to ignore this book."-Jackson Lears, Editor in Chief, Raritan "We are on the verge of a national renewal. It will have more depth and grace if we read Crawford's book carefully and take it to heart. He is a sharp theorist, a practicing mechanic, and a captivating writer."-Albert Borgmann, author of Real American Ethics "Shop Class as Soulcraft is easily the most compelling polemic since The Closing of the American Mind. Crawford offers a stunning indictment of the modern workplace, detailing the many ways it deadens our senses and saps our vitality. And he describes how our educational system has done violence to our true nature as 'homo faber'. Better still, Crawford points in the direction of a richer, more fulfilling way of life. This is a book that will endure."-Reihan Salam, associate editor at The Atlantic, co-author of Grand New Party "Crawford reveals the satisfactions of the active craftsman who cultivates his own judgment, rather than being a passive consumer subject to manipulated fantasies of individuality and creativity."-Nathan Tarcov, Committee on Social Thought, University of Chicago"Philosopher and motorcycle repair-shop owner Crawford extols the value of making and fixing things in this masterful paean to what he calls "manual competence," the ability to work with one's hands. According to the author, our alienation from how our possessions are made and how they work takes many forms: the decline of shop class, the design of goods whose workings cannot be accessed by users (such as recent Mercedes models built without oil dipsticks) and the general disdain with which we regard the trades in our emerging "information economy." Unlike today's "knowledge worker," whose work is often so abstract that standards of excellence cannot exist in many fields (consider corporate executives awarded bonuses as their companies sink into bankruptcy), the person who works with his or her hands submits to standards inherent in the work itself: the lights either turn on or they don't, the toilet flushes or it doesn't, the motorcycle roars or sputters. With wit and humor, the author deftly mixes the details of his own experience as a tradesman and then proprietor of a motorcycle repair shop with more philosophical considerations." -Publishers Weekly, Starred review "Philosopher and motorcycle mechanic Crawford presents a fascinating, important analysis of the value of hard work and manufacturing. He reminds readers that in the 1990s vocational education (shop class) started to become a thing of the past as U.S. educators prepared students for the "knowledge revolution." Thus, an entire generation of American "thinkers" cannot, he says, do anything, and this is a threat to manufacturing, the fundamental backbone of economic development. Crawford makes real the experience of working with one's hands to make and fix things and the importance of skilled labor. His philosophical background is evident as he muses on how to live a pragmatic, concrete life in today's ever more abstract world and issues a clarion call for reviving trade and skill development classes in American preparatory schools. The result is inspired social criticism and deep personal exploration. Crawford's work will appeal to fans of Robert Pirsig's classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and should be required reading for all educational leaders. Highly recommended; Crawford's appreciation for various trades may intrigue readers with white collar jobs who wonder at the end of each day what they really accomplished." -Library Journal

I really wanted to like this book - all the way through the very last page as I forced myself to struggle to the end through the ramblings of the, "I believe in progressive republicanism." declaration. I even agree with much of what he has to say but...So much of the book is lost in the meandering of poor research, academics, wistful nostalgia for a past he never experienced and poorly formed arguments that it was hard to buy what he's selling, even though I'm a returning customer. I found very little substance related to "soulcraft" throughout the text and frankly wished he'd spent more time sharing what he learned from the shop teachers and mentors he mentions but never fully explores. The constant switch from the dedication to craft and work in the trades as sometimes related but separate and at others equal in all ways is simply wrong and confusing. I hate to be the one to break the news but not everyone in the trades has any interest in mastery of craft or is a richer or more enlightened human from their work. The author posits that white collar work is devoid of all meaning and lacks the ability to measure self against product - which in itself is worth a whole discussion - but there many in the fields of labor that rise to excellence and personal mastery in the white collar ranks as well.In the end, craftsmanship reflects the individual commitment to mastery and excellence and that isn't recognized in this volume. Soul enriching craftsmanship isn't found in the majority of workers regardless of profession and I was disappointed to find so little in this book that resonated with me - an already convinced believer that time in my shop is healing for my soul.

I've read "Shop Class as Soulcraft" twice and have urged friends to read it, too. It's a super-interesting book, which draws on autobiography, phenomenology, and labor studies to make the argument that the manual trades are cognitively and morally superior to most white-collar "knowledge" work. Ironically, the argument is rather cerebral: the basic idea (or one of them anyway) is that manual workers are in touch with objective reality and must satisfy objective standards of excellence, whereas office workers spend much of their professional time managing perceptions of themselves. As someone who hated every hour I spent in an office drafting strategies, "talking points," and press guidance -- ephemeral performance art, at best -- the book spoke to me. (It also helped that I grew up in the SF Bay Area, like the author.)Admittedly, the book has a few problems. As other Amazon reviewers have noted, the author makes sweeping generalizations on the basis of his two brief jobs in the "knowledge" sector and his readings of Jackall and Braverman. The book also has an underbaked, incomplete feel to it, as if the author had trouble working his ideas into a full-blown argument. And here and there there's a hint of reverse snobbery, as when the author writes knowingly of race tracks and grimy machinery while never letting his audience (made up overwhelmingly of white-collar book readers) forget that he has a PhD from the University of Chicago. Perhaps this makes him the last Renaissance Man. (Perhaps he drinks Dos Equis, too.)However, the book is definitely on to something. It will stir up reflection and self-recognition in anyone who reads it seriously. I'm looking forward to the author's next work.

An ironic 2-star that could have been 5-stars. Crawford desperately needs a better editor and someone to buy him a beer and share the hard fact that his book is just more of what he spends 200 pages bitching about. Sad part, he can write. The tiny minority of those 200 pages is insightful, compelling and memorable. The rest is precisely what he did, and accurately derides, as an abstractor at Information Access Company - poorly summarize others’ work without adding value. I doubt those who gave awards or glowing reviews (New York Mag, “spine-tingling’) did more than skim and assume the mix of academic end notes and first person grease monkey narrative meant this was fresh and insightful. I hope Crawford goes back and finds the 26 good pages and takes another shot. He has something to say and the skill to say it.

I bought several of these. After reading it myself I've purchased a few copies for folks wrestling to understand why they feel a connection to performing manual labor while intellectual work sometimes leaves them feeling unfulfilled. We tend to like ourselves more when see that our work is tangible and meaningful, and we like ourselves less when the value of our work is ambiguous. Hopefully the book encourages readers to develop their own trade skills, value those skills in others and teach younger generations to do the same. This book deepened my appreciation for my dads decision to support my engineering education on the condition that I also develop myself as a tradesman.

So this book is exactly what it says it is. A book over how America has bashed and degraded the blue collar workmen. If you think hey this would be a great book for my father because he likes to work on cars or in the woodshed, then don't get this book. This is more of a philosophical take on the american work force. Now does it have humor and stories that make you laugh and relate, yes. But about halfway through the book I felt as if he was just repeating he point he made in the first 5 chapters.I'd buy it again and I know I'll read it again.
